Illumination is key in our everyday life and as an industrial designer it is one of the things you have to have designed at least once. This project was made with a specific user in mind. The character and traits of the hypothetical person were taken into account to create the design. The space and mood where the lamp would hang were also important.
This design was made for a hypothetical boutique that sells boho style clothing. The space has a vintage and boho-chic vibe, aiming for an organic feel. The owner of this boutique is a young woman, in her early thirties. She’s passionate, driven and focused; she is organized and stylish.
The lamp had to be done in stereotomy. I searched for organic forms to work with and ended up choosing one that resembled a monarca butterfly wing. The change in sizes of the panels gives the lamp more movement and makes it more pleasing to the eye, since it breaks the pattern.
Many sketches were made to find a dynamic way of making this organic lamp. The shapes started to resemble jellyfish, flowers and mushrooms, bringing the essence closer to the natural realm. Sketches turned to 3D models, which in turn were cut with a laser in MDF to make the first prototypes.
